The Troubles I've Seen
LGBTQIA+ Rights in Northern Ireland in the 1980s and 1990s
In September 2019, The Heritage Lottery Fund awarded a grant of £70,000 to support the production of 'The Troubles I've seen'. This was the first large-scale project of its kind to be funded in Northern Ireland.
The project aimed to collect, record and share the memories and experiences of the LGBTQIA+ community in Northern Ireland in the 1980s and 1990s in the form of a documentary, which was a time period shaped by civil unrest and legislative changes.
Pictured are the documentary participants, with the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Tina Black, in July 2022.

The Roger Casement Commemoration, 1966
Roger Casement
The annual Roger Casement commemoration takes place at Murlough Bay in Antrim. Present this year is Betty Sinclair. Speakers include Roddy Connolly (keynote, James Connolly’s son), Gerry Fitt MP, Mr O Cuinneagain (Dublin), Prof Seamus O’Neill (Dublin), Sean Redmond (Connolly Association), Seamus Clarke. Pupils from the Star of the Sea Secondary School, Ballycastle, sang the National Anthem.
Wreaths were laid by Jim McCaughan (Casement Commemoration Committee), Padraig O’Cleary (Feis na nGleann), Patrick Griffin (Kerry Commemoration Committee) and Eoin O’Mahony.
It was Casement's request that he be buried at this location but following his execution for treason, the British government refused and when Casement’s remains were finally repatriated in 1965, he was buried in the Republican plot in Glasnevin Cemetery. Soil from Murlough Bay was placed in his grave. This annual commemoration still takes place.

The Census 2021
Census
Identity
Television News
UTV News segment about 2021 census in Northern Ireland. National identity is disscused alongside Brexit and the Northern Ireland protocol. This census was the first to include an optional question on sexual orientation. The Rainbow Project welcomed the release of NI census results around sexual orientation but expressed its disappointment that the Northern Irish census did not include questions on gender identity.
John O’Doherty, Director of the Rainbow Project said:
“The LGBTQIA+ Community have always existed in Northern Ireland, but we have been a hidden population. This is partly due to repeated failures by government and public bodies to carry out their statutory duty to collect and record data on sexual orientation and gender identity. Today’s release is a meaningful first step towards ensuring all LGBTQIA+ people are counted and visible within our society, but there remains much to be done.
“While this is an important first step towards ensuring all LGBTQIA+ people are counted, today’s release should be viewed as a baseline – and not a full reflection of LGBTQIA+ populations in Northern Ireland. The 2021 census provided an opportunity to record and report on the numbers of LGBTQIA+ people across the UK. We are disappointed that changes were not made to allow for gender identity data to be gathered in the Northern Ireland census leaving a further gap in the inclusion of LGBTQIA+ people.”
