Get Involved

There are many ways to get involved in the LGBTQIA+ Heritage Project and support the work we do preserving and sharing our community’s history. Explore our events, programmes, and opportunities below to find what suits you.

Online Archive

We are always looking for contributions to our online archive from the community. Suggested materials include photos, leaflets, pamphlets, event tickets, artwork, pins, posters, and anything else LGBTQIA+ related you can think of. To enquire about contributing, please send us a DM on Instagram (lgbthistoryni) or email: heritage@hereni.org

Heritage Walk
We have created a heritage walking tour around Belfast city centre, highlighting important places and events connected to our community. Small groups, organisations, and businesses are all very welcome. To book a walking tour, please email: olive@hereni.org

History Club
Attend our monthly online History Club, where we host guest speakers presenting on subjects or events within their expertise, or invite members of the community to share their experiences on a range of topics. This takes place on the last Tuesday of every month via Zoom. To access the session, please send us a DM on Instagram (lgbthistoryni) or email: joe@hereni.org

Film Club
Our Film Club meets bi-monthly to explore historic LGBTQIA+ films, followed by a group discussion. We also showcase local films and documentaries. Details of our next Film Club screening will be shared on our social media channels.

E-learning
Groups can access our four e-learning modules focused on LGBTQIA+ history and local heritage, providing flexible ways to learn and engage.

Podcasts
We host an LGBTQIA+ podcast called Queeritage, dedicated to collecting and preserving the oral histories of our community. If you are interested in participating, please email: joe@hereni.org . Episodes are available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Amazon Music, and are also uploaded to our YouTube channel.

Lunch & Learn
We offer sessions for community groups, businesses, and organisations to learn more about the LGBTQIA+ community. Our project has created two documentaries that are exclusively available to view at Lunch & Learns. These two documentaries are:

The Troubles I've Seen
"The Troubles I’ve Seen, directed by Conan McIvor, is a powerful and often humorous documentary featuring first-hand accounts from key figures in Northern Ireland’s LGBT movement. Set against the backdrop of political unrest, it explores the fight for decriminalisation, legal recognition, and community response to the AIDS crisis.
With contributions from pioneering activists like Jeffrey Dudgeon, Doug Sobey, and Paula Keenan, the film traces the roots of Gay Liberation, the founding of Cara-Friend, and the resilience of a community that found pride and solidarity in the face of adversity."

We Were Always Here
"We Were Always Here is a powerful new documentary from the LGBTQIA+ Heritage Project that uncovers the vibrant, resilient history of queer spaces in Belfast and beyond. Told through the voices of LGBTQIA+ women and non-binary people who have shaped and safeguarded these vital places, the film explores how communities have carved out sanctuaries of Pride past and present and how these spaces continue to evolve, inspire, and thrive.
This is not just a story of survival, it’s a celebration of visibility, resistance, and belonging."

Most Lunch & Learns consist of a documentary screening followed by a Q&A and discussion. To enquire about a Lunch & Learn, please email: olive@hereni.org

Volunteering
We welcome volunteers and offer a range of ways to get involved. You might help us choose future Film Club screenings, support heritage walks, or take part in events, whatever suits your interests and availability.
