The Roger Casement Commemoration, 1966

Subject

Roger Casement

Description

The annual Roger Casement commemoration takes place at Murlough Bay in Antrim. Present this year is Betty Sinclair. Speakers include Roddy Connolly (keynote, James Connolly’s son), Gerry Fitt MP, Mr O Cuinneagain (Dublin), Prof Seamus O’Neill (Dublin), Sean Redmond (Connolly Association), Seamus Clarke. Pupils from the Star of the Sea Secondary School, Ballycastle, sang the National Anthem.

Wreaths were laid by Jim McCaughan (Casement Commemoration Committee), Padraig O’Cleary (Feis na nGleann), Patrick Griffin (Kerry Commemoration Committee) and Eoin O’Mahony.

It was Casement's request that he be buried at this location but following his execution for treason, the British government refused and when Casement’s remains were finally repatriated in 1965, he was buried in the Republican plot in Glasnevin Cemetery. Soil from Murlough Bay was placed in his grave. This annual commemoration still takes place.
