Description

Crowds gather at Murlough Bay for the memorial service for Roger Casement. It was Casement's request that he be buried at this location but following his execution for treason, the British government refused and when Casement’s remains were finally repatriated in 1965, he was buried in the Republican plot in Glasnevin Cemetery. This annual commemoration still takes place.

Speakers were Alf Murray (GAA President), Don Sigerson-Pratt (Dr George Sigerson’s grandson), Stephen Rynne (Kildare), Mr Renauld-Goulet (Breton Nationalist Party), Mr St Van Velthoven (Flanders), Roy Grealish, Seamus Clarke. Wreaths were laid by Eddie McAteer (on behalf of the Nationalist Party), Casement Commemoration Committee, Antrim GAA, Gaelic League, Feis na nGleann, Old IRA, NUI, London-Irish, Irish-American Societies, Ulster Council GAA, John Devoy Memorial Committee, NACA(I), Republican Labour Party. Messages read out on behalf of Wendy Wood (Scottish Nationalists), Emerys Robert (Plaid Cymru), G Cunningham (Aiseiri), Dr FH Boland (former Chairman UNO), Padraic Colum, Bulmer Hobson and Pat McFlynn (Chair Ulster GAA).
